The Institute is a scientific establishment, which performs inter-disciplinary complex
investigations of Lake Baikal and other reservoirs of Siberia. The main scientific
field of the Institute research is "Limnology: mechanisms of formation, biodiversity,
evolution, recent state and prognosis of development of inland water bodies and
rivers"..
Within the framework of its scientific programme the Institute conducts scientific
investigations on determining the regularities of functioning of the Lake Baikal ecosystem.
The following aspects are being surveyed: sediments of Lake Baikal as an uninterrupted
high-resolution record of paleoclimates of Eastern Siberia; mechanisms of vertical water
exchange and affect of hydrophysical factors on biological processes including that on
ecology of endemic species; biodiversity of endemic fauna and flora; phylogenetic relations
within different groups of Baikal organisms and out-of-Baikal forms; molecular phylogeny of
Baikal and out-of-Baikal organisms; chemical composition of Baikal water, bottom sediments
and biological organisms; migration routes of ecotoxicants along the trophic chains; aerosol
composition in atmosphere above Lake Baikal. Of special attention are the elaboration and
application of new methods and devices, and their precision.
