Complex expedition on the R/V Akademik Koptyug from May 27 to June 1, 2026

From May 27 to June 1, 2026, a complex expedition was carried out on the R/V Akademik Koptyug. The purpose of the expedition was to assess the contribution of natural and anthropogenic sources to atmospheric pollution over Lake Baikal.

Over 200 water samples of tributaries were collected on the southwestern and southeastern coasts. Some of the parameters were determined directly on board, the remaining samples were preserved for subsequent analysis in the laboratory.

At the same time, atmospheric observations were conducted. Data store on the content and spatiotemporal variability of small gaseous impurities, ozone, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, as well as gaseous elementary mercury was replenished. Number and mass concentrations of solid particles were measured, the composition of inorganic and organic compounds of atmospheric aerosol was studied. It was predicted how meteorological and synoptic factors affected the variability of these features in the atmosphere across the lake`s southern basin. Besides, 10 samples of atmospheric aerosol were collected for chemical analysis in the Laboratory of Hydrochemistry and Atmospheric Chemistry of LIN SB RAS.
